Happy Lunar New Year!

January 23rd, 2012

Happy Year of the Dragon! I can’t believe it’s been a full zodiac cycle since the beginning of the new millennium. Yes, I’m mixing together my solar and lunar calendars haha. Lunar New Year is, no doubt, the largest and most festive holiday in my culture and many other (Asian/Eastern) cultures as well. It’s a nice time for family reunions and see the people that I don’t get to see on a regular basis. Read the rest of this entry »

Living there and enjoying the short amount of time there rendered me with little time and energy to open up my blog. Instead, I will now be recollecting the memories that I have in the next few posts… Read the rest of this entry »

Environment Lag

June 20th, 2011

You would think that after travelling 15 hours on a plane to a country on the other side of the world that I would be jet lagged. Aside from waking up at 6:30AM, I don’t feel much jet lag. Besides, I usually wake up at 7:30AM or 8:00AM on a normal basis for school so I guess I’m on my way to quickly adjusting time zones. Read the rest of this entry »

April 2nd, 2011

Skype Family’s 2nd Anniversary is coming up and it is largely a byproduct of the Hallyu Wave! But what is the Hallyu Wave? Written as 한류 in Korean, it is also known as the Korean Wave in English. The term was first coined in the late 1990s and refers to the phenomenon of Chinese fascination for Korean TV dramas and Korean hip-hop. It began in 1997 when Chinese media and the national China Central Television Station (CCTV) aired the Korean drama What is Love? during the prime time slot. The drama received the 2nd highest ratings in Chinese TV history. Since then to now, the Hallyu Wave has helped shaped Korean popular culture. The Hallyu Wave no longer refers to just the Chinese fascination for Korean TV dramas and popular culture, but the phenomenon that is sweeping the globe. Skype Family is a product of the growing K-pop community (artists and fandoms), a large aspect of Korean popular culture and thus the Hallyu Wave.  Read the rest of this entry »
